Kadala Curry

Kadala Curry is an authentic Indian dish which is very popular in the state of Kerala in India. Kadala Curry goes very well with puttu, aapam, roti and dosa.





Ingredients - Serves 4
  • Kadala / black chana - 1cup (soak overnight and pressure cook with salt for 4 whistles)
  • Chopped Onion -1 cup
  • Chopped Tomato - 1 cup
  • Ginger garlic paste - 1/2 tsp
  • Coconut grated - 1 tbsp
  • Roasted gram - 1 tbsp
  • Coriander seeds - 1 tsp
  • Jeera - 1 tsp
  • Dry red chilli - 2 to 3
  • Red chilli powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Garam masala powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Coriander leaves - few
  • Oil - 2 tbsp
  • Salt to taste

Method
  • Heat the pan with 1 tbsp of oil and add ginger garlic paste 
  • Fry for few minutes
  • Add onion, tomato, coriander seeds, jeera and dry red chilli
  • Saute for few minutes, cool it and grind into a smooth paste with coconut and roasted gram
  • Again heat the pan with 1 tsp of oil and add grounded paste
  • Add dry spices - red chilli powder, garam masala and turmeric powder
  • Bring it to boil until it releases oil to the sides of the pan
  • Add salt, cooked kadala / black chana and boil it for few minutes so that the masala gets absorbed by the kadala
  • Garnish with coriander leaves
  • Serve hot with puttu, appam, dosa or chapati



Nutritional Information
  • Black chana / kadala is low in fat but high in fibre and protein
  • Black chana helps in digestion and lowers cholesterol
  • 4 servings = 760 calories approximately
