Naan is an Indian flat bread, traditionally made in a tandoori oven. We can also make Naan using a regular tawa at home.
Ingredients - Serves 4
· All purpose flour / maida – 2 cups
· Rapid rise yeast – 1tsp
· Warm water – ½ cup
· Sugar – 1tsp
· Salt – 1tsp
· Yogurt / curd – 2 tblsp
· Oil – 1tblsp
· Extra flour for dusting and rolling
Method
- Add yeast and sugar to warm water, mix well, cover and keep it in a warm place for 10 – 15 minutes
- Mix All purpose flour / maida, salt and oil without lumps in a large bowl
- Meanwhile, the yeast and water mixture will become foamy
- Add foamy mixture to the flour
- Mix well with 2 tblsp of yogurt / curd and knead it into a soft dough (Do not add anymore water, if needed add yogurt / curd)
- Add 2 tsp of oil over the dough
- Cover the dough and keep it in warm place for 1 hour
- If you live in a colder place, you can pre-heat the conventional oven for 10 minutes and turn it off and keep the dough inside
- Once the dough has risen, add a little oil to the dough and punch it well
- Make medium sized balls and roll them in a floured surface into a round chapatti like shape and then stretch from one side to form an oval shaped Naan
- Heat the tawa and place the rolled Naan in it
- Cook them in medium flame on both sides until you get a nice brown spots
- Apply butter and serve it with a suitable side dish
Tips
· You can make this Naan in a conventional oven using regular baking trays
· You can also use different toppings (garlic, chat masala, sesame seeds etc)
· If the dough is sticky don’t worry, it will only make the Naan softer
· Allow the dough to rise for another 1 hour if you use regular yeast instead of Rapid rise yeast
