Irish Soda Bread

Irish soda bread is irresistibly tasty and easy to make with no yeast. Soda bread is popular throughout Ireland and this bread is made using wholemeal flour or white flour.


Ingredients - Serves 5
  • All purpose flour - 1 cup
  • Whole meal flour - 1 cup
  • Baking soda - 1 tsp
  • Sugar - 1 tbsp
  • Salt - 1/4 tsp
  • Oats - 2 tbsp
  • Butter milk - 1 cup

Method
  • Mix all purpose flour, whole meal flour, oats, baking soda, salt, sugar in a big bowl
  • Pour buttermilk slowly and mix the flour
  • Make it into a dough and shape it round
  • Place it in the greased baking tray
  • Make a small 'x' mark on the top of the dough with a sharp knife
  • Bake the bread at 350 C for 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean
  • Bread is brownish and crusty on the top but very soft on the inside
  • Serve with any spread

    • This bread is very low in cholesterol, saturated fat and is a good source of dietary fibre
    • 2 slices = 210 calories approximately
